Chasing The American Dream

May 01, 2006

CAPITAL PUNISHMENT

A LOT THINGS LEAVE ME SCRATCHING MY HEAD. SOME BOGGLE MY FRAGILE MIND. I’M NOT PROUD OF IT, BUT I’VE BEEN HANGING OUT IN CHAT ROOMS FOR THE PAST FOUR MONTHS. I’VE OBSERVED THAT CHAT ROOMS ARE LIKE MINI SOCIETIES. THERE ARE THOSE THAT SEEM TO RULE THE ROOST AND DOMINATE THE CONVERSATIONS. THESE PEOPLE SEEM ATTENTION-STARVED OR SOMETHING. PERHAPS IN REAL LIFE, NO ONE LISTENS TO THEM SO THEY FEEL THE NEED TO PLAY KING OR QUEEN. AND THEY LIKE TO ENFORCE CERTAIN HOUSE RULES, IF YOU WILL. ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THIS? IF YOU’VE ALREADY ASKED YOURSELF, “Why is he shouting,” THEN I GUESS YOU ARE.

No I wasn't shouting up there, but that brings me to the point. I gotta tell ya, of all the things I’ve witnessed thus far, the “Rule of Capitals” cracks me up the most. I mean it’s literally a capital sin (pun intended, of course) in these chat rooms if one types in all capital letters because evidently, you’re shouting and hurting everyone’s ears. People actually get annoyed and offended and down right nasty to those using all caps. Can you believe this crap? I don’t get it. Why is everyone so afraid of CAPS? Oh, stop shouting! Please turn off your caps! OMG, quick, someone call the ALL CAPS police!!!

It seems to me there are more important things in this world to worry about than your fellow man using all caps. People, they’re just letters. Who cares? Besides, the letters are bigger and easier to read. Doesn’t that count for something? I guess I’m just different. Maybe that’s why I’m not cut out for the chat room. My honest assessment is that if you have half a brain, than that’s probably half a brain too much to engage in chat room conversations. My advice? STAY AWAY FROM CHAT ROOMS. AND YES, NOW I AM SHOUTING!

  • Hard to believe, but I have yet to do the chat room thing! And thanks to your blog, I don't feel I've missed out on a thing! Thanks! Real live people conversation is where it's at for me. More dynamic and rewarding. I'm "Chatty" enough for that!

  • I did the chat room thing about six years ago. One night I got online and did not sign off until the NEXT MORNING (yes, I'm screaming that part out loud) at around 7-ish in the am.

That was the day I said "no more" to chat rooms. They are just a waste of time.

Plus, blogs are where its at :)

  • Never did the chat room thing, either.

But your post reminds me of a lesson I learned about online and offline personalities a few summers ago in a college class. The teacher required us to go online and post comments to people's papers. We were also required to contribute to class discussions. She actually kept score on both counts (forgive her, she was new).

The people who talked the least in class, talked the most online. And the sweetest people in class often left the nastiest messages online.

    Very weird.

  • At least half of my coworkers (does this need a hyphen?) send e-mails in caps. They're not trying to shout something, they're just lazy. These are the same folks that refuse to check
their spelling and punctuation. I've found that my brain has trouble interpreting all caps writing. Truly, I
have to read the same passage 2 or 3 times before it sinks in.

  • I'm just dropping in on my favorite blogger! How are ya sweetie!

I guess in today's world we have Internettiquette and certain rules apply, one of them is using caps indicates shouting. Then there are those who are too lazy to type out the whole word and type in chatroom speak, i.e, U R 2 much!

I can see teens doing that but I've witnessed a few adults doing this and I just want to ask if they are too lazy to write out the entire world.

    Okay, maybe we're getting old...

  • I used to be a chat room junkie (never typed in all caps). I have now replaced my chat room addiction with a blogging addiction. I'm cured!!
