Chasing The American Dream

March 24, 2005

UNEXPECTED

I get a kick out of accomplishing something, a first, in my life no matter how small. Today, I converted a 7-9-10 split. For you non-bowlers out there, that's one pin in one corner and two in the other corner. The first ball I threw right-handed and I got the rare spare throwing it left-handed. The best part was having my son there to witness it.

Another surprising event, I acually cried during the movie, The Pacifier. Geez, I really *have* changed for real.

  • You cried during the Pacifier???? Wha???? But it had a hilarious duck in it, right?

Anyway, I was thinking about your blog and the Anon. that was commenting on your "mundane shit". I think shedding light on the mundane details of life - and being able to craft stories out of those details is a whole genre of writing to itself. There are lots of authors who do that well - ShopGirl by Steve Martin comes to mind for me (other than that I am drawing a blank of course). And Office Space was all about the day-in-day-out drudgery - and it's freakin' hilarious. I love this type of writing - and I think it takes a lot more work to write (well) in this style. If you were writing about sex constantly it would be kind of a cheap thrill - and there are plenty of other sites for that.

Calling you out for chronicling the mundane isn't really a valid criticism. You should just be like - that's my genre biyatch!!

  • I'm gonna have to see that 7-9-10 split again....with my own eyes. Ha! I used to bowl in a league (when I was a kid), so I know first-hand how exciting that is. Congrats!

  • LOVE bowling!! Always a good time there!!

Congrats on the split, but left-handed?? Do we really believe you?? jk :)

  • Um, I'm not so much for the bowling (I broke a finger the one and only time I tried it) but I do appreciate the review of "The Pacifier". I was thinking of taking the foster kid (13 y/o boy) to the movies this weekend, so I'll add that to the possible list.

  • Congratulations on your split! I used to bowl many moons ago until I broke several fingernails and couldn't do it again. I'm a princess so these things are important to me. :)

I'll probably never see the Pacifier as I don't have any kids to take to see it, but thanks for the update. I'm glad you got to spend some time with your son. Quality time with someone you love is always da bomb!

  • You mean you cried because you were forced to sit through The Pacifier, right? Right?
